What is Simbiosis?
A Spanish word meaning an association of participating
members that enjoy reciprocal benefits, SIMBIOSIS
is an Electronic Network sponsored by countries of Latin America and the OAS to
connect research scientists, experts and organizational centers with interest
in Biotechnology, Food Technology and Biodiversity.
Since its inception, the system has been used principally among the Latin American countries providing
information in three thematic areas, namely, biochemistry, and molecular biology, bioprocesses, food processing
and preservation. Presently, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras,
Mexico, Panama, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela have nodes on the Simbiosis website with links to the major
science-based institutions in those countries.
The Simbiosis Network provides information on continuing research programmes, national institutions,
national research and development efforts and training opportunities. The information is disseminated on the
Simbiosis network in the form of databases, directories and virtual libraries and includes links to other pertinent
sites. Through its centres, Simbiosis provides access and adds value to information generated by research development
centres in Latin America and the Caribbean and promotes diffusion of technical results.
